"THE LAST LEGAL OBSTACLE TO CERTIFICATION WAS HURDLED OVERNIGHT"

GOVERNOR SIGNS CERTIFICATION OF TENNESSEE'S SUFFRAGE AMENDMENT RATIFICATION

Nashville, Tennessee (JFK+50) On the morning of August 24, 1920, Governor Albert H. Roberts* signed the certification of Tennessee's ratification of the Susan B. Anthony Amendment.

Overnight, the last legal obstacle to the Governor's action was hurdled when State Attorney General Frank M. Thompson ruled that writs of certiorari** and supersedeas*** "had the effect of setting aside an injunction won by suffrage opponents in lower courts."

It was expected that Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby would issue a proclamation that the SBA Amendment was properly ratified and officially recognize it as the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.

*Albert H. Roberts (1868-1946) was born in Overton County, TN & received his B.A. at Hiwassee College (1889).  AHR was admitted to the bar in 1894.  He was Governor of Tennessee (1919-1921).

**writ of certiorari requires a lower court to send up the record of a case so its actions can be reviewed by a higher court

***writ of supersedeas commands a lower court to halt enforcement of an injunction
