"AIMED TO CONQUER THE TYRANNY OF DISTANCE"

QANTAS FOUNDED 100 YEARS AGO

Winton, Queensland, Australia  (JFK+50) Qantas*, or Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service, was founded here in Winton on November 16, 1920 by Hudson Fysh, Paul McGinness and Fergus McMaster.  Fysh & McGinness were veterans of the World War I Australian Flying Corps** while Mr. McMaster was a rancher.

Joe Breitfeller writes...

"The risky endeavor aimed to conquer the 'tyranny of distance' that stood in the way (of) growth for modern Australia."

*Qantas, headquartered in Sydney, is the oldest continuously-operating airline in the world & the only carrier that serves all inhabited continents.

**Australian Flying Corps (A.F.C.) was founded in 1912 as a branch of the Australian army responsible for operating aircraft during WWI.  It was the forerunner of the Royal Australian Air Force.
