"BEAUTIFUL HAT, I'LL TRY IT ON AT HOME"

JFK & LBJ MAKE PLANS FOR NEW ADMINISTRATION

Johnson City, Texas (JFK+50) On November 17, 1960, President-elect John F. Kennedy and Vice President-elect Lyndon B. Johnson met at the LBJ Ranch* here in Texas to make plans for their new administration.

It was the first meeting between the two men since the election.  They were joined by Speaker of the House of Representatives Sam Rayburn and Texas Governor Price Daniel.

Senator Kennedy arrived in the morning hours after a flight from Palm Beach, Florida.  He was accompanied by special assistant Kenneth O'Donnell and Massachusetts congressman and close friend Torbert Macdonald.

Upon arrival at the ranch, the President-elect was presented a large "snow-white" Texas hat and, despite encouragement from members of the press, he would not put on in front of them.

 JFK said...

"It's a beautiful hat...I'll try it on at home."

*LBJ Ranch is located in the Hill Country of central Texas, 14 miles west of Johnson City.  As POTUS, LBJ spent 20% of his time here.  In 1960, the Ranch included 300 acres but today, as part of the LBJ National Historic Site, it has expanded to 1,570 acres.
