"NIXON: THICK SKIN, NO VISION, LONG MEMORY"

JFK SAYS NEW YORK WILL GO DEMOCRATIC

New York City (JFK+50) On November 5, 1960, Senator John F. Kennedy addressed a crowd of supporters at the Coliseum* here in New York accompanied by Senator Lyndon B. Johnson and his family.

Senator Kennedy said...

"You have seen the elephants in the circus.  They have their heads of ivory, thick skins, no vision, long memory.  And when they move around the ring...they grab the tail of the elephant in front of them.**

Well, Dick (Nixon) grabbed that tail in 1952 and 1956, but in 1960 he is running, not the President.***

I believe that (next) Tuesday...New York...will go Democratic and so will the country."

*New York Coliseum (1956-2000) a convention center in Columbus Circle, Manhattan with 323,000 sq. ft. & 4 exhibition floors.  Designed by Leon & Lionel Levy, the building cost $35 million.

**Elephant skin is 1" thick & very tough.  They possibly have cognitive maps to allow them to remember large-scale spaces over long periods of time.

***JFK was illustrating the phenomenon of a politician gaining an advantage by "grabbing the coat-tails" of a popular president like Eisenhower.
