"THE FATHER OF THE BERLIN AIRLIFT"

JFK CONFERS WITH GENERAL CLAY AT THE WHITE HOUSE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On January 7, 1962, President John F. Kennedy met with retired U.S. Army General Lucius D. Clay* in the Oval Office at the White House.

General Clay, JFK's Berlin adviser, gave the order initiating the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49 which allowed free West Berlin to survive a Soviet blockade of their city.  Clay is known as "the father of the Berlin Airlift."

President Kennedy and General Clay were together in West Berlin in June 1963 when the President said...

"I am proud to come here in the company of my fellow American General Clay who has been in this city during its great moments of crisis." 

*General Lucius Dubingnon Clay (1898-1978) was born in Marietta, GA, son of Senator Alexander S. Clay.  LDC graduated from West Point in 1918 & administered occupied Germany following WWII.
