'TURN ON, TUNE IN, DROP OUT"

THOUSANDS GATHER FOR HUMAN BE-IN

San Francisco, California (JFK+50) On January 14, 1967, a "Human Be-In" was held at Golden Gate Park Polo Fields here in San Francisco.  The event, organized by Michael Bowen, was attended by as many as 30,000.

Guest speaker Dr. Timothy Leary* told the audience to "turn on, tune in, drop out."  Music was provided by Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead.

The so-called "Counterculture**" surfaced with the "Be-In" which encouraged questioning authority.  The event was a prelude to the "Summer of Love."

*Timothy Francis Leary (1920-1996) was born in Springfield, MA & earned his BA at University of Alabama, MA at Washington State University & PhD at University of California, Berkeley.  

TFL was a psychologist who supported the use of psychedelic drugs.  He worked on the Harvard Psilocybin Project, 1960-1962.  Richard Nixon called him "the most dangerous man in America." 

**Counterculture movement of the 1960s was an anti-establishment movement of predominantly young people who rejected societal norms.
