"WE SHALL BE AS A CITY UPON A HILL"

JFK DELIVERS FAREWELL SPEECH

Boston, Massachusetts (JFK+50) On January 9, 1961, President-elect John F. Kennedy addressed the legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the State House here in Boston.

The President-elect said...

"For fourteen years I have placed my confidence in the citizens of Massachusetts...and they have...responded by placing their confidence in me.

For forty-three years, this has been my home, and God willing, wherever I serve this shall remain my home.

The enduring qualities of Massachusetts...the Pilgrim and the Puritan, the fisherman and the farmer, the Yankee and the immigrant...will not be...forgotten in (the) executive mansion.

I have been guided by the standard John Winthrop* set on the flagship Arbella 331 years ago...'We must always consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill---the eyes of all people are upon us.'"

*John Winthrop (1587-1649) was born in Edwardstone UK.  JW became a Puritan lawyer & led the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  He served as governor for 12 years.  JW's vision of the Puritan Colony as "a city upon a hill" dominated the development of MA BAY.
