"THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS"

HARDING CALLS FOR INQUIRY INTO NEGLECT OF DISABLED SERVICEMEN

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On April 5, 1921, President Warren G. Harding asked the Allied Reparations Commission to make "diligent inquiry" of department heads "to find out...where...agencies have been...neglectful...in caring for disabled service men."

The President's statement, read to the special commission by Charles G. Dawes*, included these words...

"There have been numerous complaints that the government is neglecting the...care of these defenders.  The regulations and policies adopted at this time (will) be in effect for a full half century to come.  It is...important to start on a firm foundation."

*Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951) was born in Marietta, GA & attended Cincinnati Law School.  CGD was a banker, general, diplomat & 1st Director of the Bureau of the Budget.  He served as VPOTUS under Coolidge.
