"THE COVENANT CAN HAVE NO SANCTION BY US"

HARDING WILL TAKE STAND AGAINST LEAGUE OF NATIONS

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On April 4, 1921, N.O. Messenger wrote in the Evening Star...

"The President intends to finally dissociate the administration from the present covenant of the league of nations."

President Warren G. Harding was scheduled to address the Congress of the United States in one week when he would make it clear " that the U.S. cannot build upon" the covenant.*

Mr. Messenger added that the President had not yet made a decision on the issue of a separate peace with Germany. 

*WGH spoke to Congress on April 12 1921.  The President said...

"In the existing League of Nations, world governing with its superpowers, this republic will have no part.  The League covenant can have no sanction by us."
