"1ST PUBLIC APPEARANCE SINCE BECOMING AMBASSADOR"

HARVEY SAYS U.S. WILL NEVER ENTER LEAGUE OF NATIONS

London (JFK+50) On May 19, 1921, Colonel George Harvey*, United States ambassador to the Court of St. James, attended a reception sponsored by the Pilgrims Society** of the American Ambassador.  It was the Colonel's first public appearance since being appointed to the post.

The New York Tribune reported that the Ambassador "brushed aside any lingering illusions that the U.S. would have any relations...with the League of Nations."

The Colonel also complimented President Warren G. Harding by saying his outstanding qualities include "breadth of vision, greatness of heart, and fidelity to his race."

*George Brinton McClellan Harvey (1864-1928) was born in Peacham, Vermont & attended Peacham Academy.  GBMH became a reporter & protege of Joseph Pulitzer.  He was managing editor of the New York World before becoming a top adviser to Woodrow Wilson.  GBMH served as US Ambassador to U.K. 1921-1923.

**Pilgrims Society was founded in 1902 by Sir Harry Brittain to promote good will between the U.S. & Great Britain.
