HARDING SUPPORTS ALLIES' DEMAND THAT GERMANY PAY UP
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 9, 1921, a "high spokesman" of the Harding administration "made it clear (that) this government is vigorously behind the Allies in the demand that Germany* accept the terms just proposed."
Carter Field, in his front-page story in the New York Tribune, reported that Republican leader Frank W. Mondell** of the House of Representatives "had a long conference with President Warren G. Harding today" and verified that the Knox peace resolution "would be held up in the House indefinitely."
*Germany was under the Weimar Republic, a federal constitutional republic, 1918-1933. The 1st constituent assembly took place in the city of Weimar.
**Frank Wheeler Mondell (1860-1939) was born in St. Louis, Mo. FWM became mayor of Newcastle, WY & served in the US House of Representatives 1895-1923. He was majority leader 1919-1923. In 1924, FWM served as chairman of the Republican National Convention.
