"CLEARS U.S. OF LEAGUE OF NATIONS"

U.S.-GERMANY SIGN PEACE TREATY IN BERLIN

Berlin, Germany (JFK+50) On August 25, 1921, a treaty "establishing peace between the United States and Germany" was signed here in Berlin*.

Carter Field reports in The New York Tribune that the treaty protects "every right claimed for this country under the Treaty of Versailles" while at the same time not binding "the United states on any provision objected to with regard to the treaty."

The peace agreement with Germany, said Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes, "is in accordance with the peace resolution adopted by Congress and approved by the President July 2, 1921."

*The U.S.-German Peace Treaty (1921) laid the foundations for U.S.-German cooperation not under strict supervision of the League of Nations.
