"DO NOT PROVE THE BATTLESHIP IS OBSOLETE"

BOMBING TESTS PROVE PROJECTILES SUPERIOR

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On August 19, 1921, the joint army and navy board* declared that bombing tests by aircraft against seized German vessels and submarines "do not prove that the battleship is obsolete."

The tests, conducted off the Virginia capes, proved that "projectiles were superior to the defensive features of construction of the vessels attacked."

The board also found "darkness, fog or failing weather will greatly reduce the effectiveness of aircraft in search operations."

*The Joint Army & Navy Board was established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903.  The board was comprised of representatives of the Navy General Board & the Army General Staff.  The JA&N Board acted as an advisory committee.
