PRESIDENT HARDING MAKES FIRST VISIT TO WEST POINT
West Point, New York (JFK+50) On September 15, 1921, President Warren G. Harding visited the United States Military Academy located here in West Point, New York. It was his first visit to the academy.
The President was greeted with a 21 gun salute as he passed through the gate. The Commander-in-chief then reviewed the cadet corps, took lunch with superintendent Brigadier General Douglas MacArthur*, and played a round of golf on the academy course.
*Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) was born in Little Rock, Arkansas & attended West Texas Military Academy before admission to West Point. DM graduated first in his class at the USMA in 1903. He served as superintendent of the academy 1919-1922 where he attempted a series of reforms.
