PRESIDENT HARDING HAS BAD DAY ON THE LINKS
Southampton, New York (JFK+50) On September 14, 1921, President Warren G. Harding encountered "hard luck" on the 9th and 15th holes of the National Golf Links* here at Southampton.
The New York Tribune reports that "two 10's" on those holes wrecked the "presidential score."
The course's designer, Charles Blair Macdonald**, calls it "the most difficult in America," marked by hidden traps, marshy water & unnatural obstacles.
*National Golf Links is located on Long Island, NY & opened in 1911. NGL hosted the initial Walker Cup in 1922. It covers 250 acres.
**Charles Blair Macdonald (1855-1939) was born in Niagra Falls, Canada & became a major figure in early American golf. CBD was the winner of the 1st amateur golf championship & a driving force in the founding of the U.S. Golf Association.
