GENERAL PERSHING GETS SIOUX INDIAN NAME
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On November 20, 1921, General John J. Pershing was informed by telegram that "hereafter (he) will be known to members of the Sioux Indian tribe as 'Brave Eagle'."
The name had been conferred on the General at a council meeting held at the Sioux Rosebud reservation on Armistice Day.
Commissioner Burke of the Bureau of Indian Affairs presented the telegram to General Pershing. It reads...
"His name will be Brave Eagle on account of his bravery. He will be known as Brave Eagle from now on."
