"BERLINERS DEMAND RELIEF FROM HYPERINFLATION"

FOOD RIOT BREAKS OUT IN BERLIN'S PUBLIC MARKET

Berlin (JFK+50) On November 21, 1921, "a hunger riot broke out" here in Berlin's public market as a large group of men and women raided food shops and demanded "relief from the increasing costs of living."

The New York Tribune reports the Communists "are becoming active" and are calling for employees to take action against their employers.

Hyperinflation* affected post World War I Germany (1921-1923) causing political instability and misery for the people.  The situation resulted after reparation payments began in June 1921 causing a rapid devaluation of the German mark.

*Hyperinflation is a term used by economists to describe a period of extremely high inflation.  The benchmarks for it are when inflation is higher than 50% for one month or more.
