A NATIONAL TRAGEDY ON A FRIDAY AFTERNOON
Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) It is November 22, 1963, I am sitting in my afternoon World Geography class at Young High School. I turned 15 years of age on June 15th and was an avid JFK admirer since his election to the presidency in November 1960.
Our class is interrupted by an intercom announcement by the principal. He tells us that President Kennedy has been shot in Dallas, Texas. Everyone in the room, including our teacher, is stunned by the announcement.
Mr. Hicks then tunes in the intercom radio and we listen to the reports from Dallas until the announcement of JFK's death.
The principal asks all of us to stand to attention as the school buglers play 'Taps' and the Flag outside the school is lowered to half-staff.
It remains to this day one of my most distinct memories and saddest times in my life.
In reflection, I would like to quote fellow JFK researcher, Vince Palamara*, who writes in his latest book the following words...
"Without the death of President Kennedy, no LBJ, no Nixon, no Ford, no Carter, and maybe not even Reagan or the Bushes. No Vietnam...no Watergate; the list goes on.
We lost a lot when we lost JFK. We must never forget that."
Amen, Vince.
