BRIAND FAVORS RENEWAL OF RELATIONS WITH RUSSIA
Paris, France (JFK+50) It was reported by the Evening Star on November 15, 1921 that Premier Aristide Briand* will attempt to reach an informal agreement with the government of the United States "regarding the resumption of relations with Soviet Russia."
The front page story, written by Hiram K. Moderwell, states...
"It seems certain that France has abandoned hope of a forcible overthrow of the Soviet regime and has tentatively negotiated with the bolsheviki**."
In the face of bitter opposition in the foreign office, Briand "favors, in principle, the renewal of relations with Russia."
*Aristide Pierre Henri Briand (1862-1932) was born in Nantes, FR, studied at the Faculty of Law of Paris & served 11 terms as Prime Minister of France. APHB is best remembered for his focus on international politics & reconciliation in the period between WWI & WWII. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1926.
