"SAILORS SENT DOG AWAY WITH A BONE"

ST. BERNARD RESCUES COLLAPSED PIER HANDYMAN

Boston, Massachusetts (JFK+50) On March 5, 1922, the Evening Star reports a good deed done on March 3rd for a landsman by a dog belonging to a sea captain.

According to the Star, a handyman working here in Boston, collapsed in the archway of the pier where he was finishing up his duties.  A St. Bernard*, owned by master of the schooner Yankee, found 'Buck' Dan and with his teeth dragged the unfortunate man to the side of the schooner Pilgrim.

'Rover' proceeded to bark loud enough to wake the ship's crew and they were able to revive 'Buck.'  The sailors then..."patted the dog on the head and sent him away with a bone."

*St. Bernard--a very large working dog from the Alps of Italy & Switzerland.  The dogs were originally bred for rescue work on the Italian-Swiss border.
