MRS. COOK ELECTED PRESIDENT-GENERAL OF D.A.R.
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On April 20, 1923, Mrs. Anthony Wayne Cook was elected president-general of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution "by the narrow margin" of 161 votes over Mrs. G. Wallace W. Hanger.
The Evening Star describes the contest as "one of the most bitter and closest...in the history" of the D.A.R.
Mrs. Thomas Alva Edison*, wife of the famous inventor, was chosen chaplain-general.
In her remarks after the election, Mrs. Cook said...
"I feel proud that I have been called upon to fill so high an office. Keep Steady--that is my keynote. The work we must do...is a work of necessity."
*Mina Miller Edison (1865-1947) was born in Akron, Ohio & became a community activist in Ft. Myers, Florida. MME advanced the use of public spaces & educational initiatives.
