SANTA ANNA SURRENDERS AT SAN JACINTO; RECOGNIZES THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS
San Jacinto (JFK+50) On April 21, 1836, Texan General Sam Houston launched a surprise attack on the encampment of Mexican forces under Generalissimo Santa Anna along the San Jacinto River in the Republic of Texas.
The attack turned into a rout with hundreds of Mexican soldiers taken prisoner including Santa Anna himself.
Coming on the heels of two Mexican massacres, Texan soldiers went into this battle crying out...
"Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad."
Santa Anna signed a document giving Texas her independence in return for his own freedom. Sam Houston became president of the Lone Star Republic and governor of the state of Texas in 1845.
JFK+50 NOTE
The Republic of Texas was not recognized by Mexico at the time of the Battle of San Jacinto. It was considered a rebellious province. It is said that before he was identified after the battle, Santa Anna attempted to blend in with his captured soldiers but when they said "Viva Santa Anna" the game was up.
