FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO TAKE OVER CAPITOL TOURS, OFFER THEM FREE TO THE PUBLIC
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On August 24, 1923, The Evening Star reports the "old fashioned" United States Capitol building guide system which "for years has allowed a coterie of a few men" to charge a fee to the public for a tour.
Plans are underway to oust the current system and replace it with one operated by the federal government "free to all comers."
The plan was announced by Sergeant-at-arms Joseph G. Rodgers of the House of Representatives who had conferred with the Sergeant-at-arms of the Senate, David Berry.
Mr. Rodgers is quoted as saying...
"There is no other public building in the country...where the people are charged a fee."
