"PRESIDENT COOLIDGE WILL MAKE A GOOD PRESIDENT"

SENATOR LODGE CONFERS WITH PRESIDENT COOLIDGE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On August 7, 1923, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr.* (R-Massachusetts) met with President Calvin Coolidge "regarding the arrangements for President (Warren G.) Harding's funeral."

After the conference, Senator Lodge said...

"President Coolidge will make a good President, and the whole country will get behind him."

When reporters suggested Mr. Coolidge was strong in the Western states, Senator Lodge responded...

"He is strong in Massachusetts too!"

JFK+50 NOTE

Although very popular during his short term as POTUS, Warren G. Harding has routinely finished at the low end of the scale in presidential leadership according to historians.  In 1982, conservative scholars rated him in 36th place.

In a 2021 C-SPAN survey of presidential scholars, Harding's ratings were between 30 and 41.  Calvin Coolidge has fared much better.  In fact, according to the same survey his ratings were between 15 & 27.

So, maybe Senator Lodge was right.

*Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr. (1850-1924) was born in Beverly, Massachusetts & grew up on Boston's Beacon Hill.  HCLS graduated Harvard University 1872, Harvard Law School 1874 & earned a PhD in history at American University.  He served in US House of Representatives 1887-1893 & US Senate 1893-1924.
