"ALMOST ENTIRE CITY OF YOKOHAMA IS AFIRE"

SIX MINUTE SHOCK WAVE FOLLOWS MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE IN JAPAN

San Francisco (JFK+50) On September 1, 1923, the Associated Press reports "practically the entire city of Yokohama* (Japan) is afire...as a result of a conflagration which broke out after a severe shock."

The earthquake shock lasted over six minutes and included an "up and down" movement.

News of the tragedy was received at RCA's local station here in San Francisco via the Japanese radio station at Iwaki.  More than a thousand Americans live in Yokohama.

*Yokohama (horizontal beach) is located on the east coast of Hondo, on the Bay of Tokyo 17 miles SW of Tokyo.  In the 1920s, the city was the center of a vast silk industry.

JFK+50 NOTE 

The Great Kanto earthquake of 1923 was measured at a magnitude of 7.9.  It devastated Tokyo and caused widespread damage throughout the region.  Estimated death toll 142,800.
