"BODIES OF VICTIMS CLOGGED IN RIVER SUMIDA"

HALF MILLION DEAD IN JAPAN'S EARTHQUAKE, TIDAL WAVE & FIRE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On September 4, 1923, The Evening Star reports "virtual destruction of Tokio and Yokohama" following earthquake, tidal wave and fire.  There are 150,000 dead in Tokio alone with 100,000 more in Yokohama.

The Associated Press report states...

"Bodies of quake victims are clogged in the river Sumida* which flows through Tokio.  Thousands threw themselves into the river when the shocks were occurring."

*Sumida River flows through central Tokyo, Japan & branches from the Arakawa River at Iwabuchi and flows into Tokyo Bay.
