"ONE OF THE GREATEST DISASTERS IN HISTORY"

EARTHQUAKE, FIRES & TIDAL WAVES DESTROY MAJOR JAPANESE CITIES

San Francisco (JFK+50) On September 3, 1923 the Associated Press reports that "at least 100,000 persons are dead" as a result of the recent massive earthquake that struck Tokio and Yokohama.

Shocks were followed by tidal waves "of great intensity."

The Evening Star describes the earthquake as "one of the greatest disasters in history."

Sub-headlines describe "FIRES STILL RAGE IN TOKIO,"BODIES LIE ABOUT IN STREETS," and "SURVIVORS LEFT WITHOUT FOOD."
