"IF WOMEN WANT SOMETHING, THEY ARE BOUND TO GET IT"

PRESIDENT SAYS CONGRESS WILL RESPOND FAVORABLY TO EQUAL RIGHTS FOR WOMEN

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On November 17, 1923, a large delegation of the National Women's Party* gathered in the historic East Room at the White House to request the support of President Calvin Coolidge in their battle to win passage of an amendment granting equal rights to women.

The President responded with these words...

"I doubt if any of my countrymen would hesitate to assert that if the womanhood of the nation want something they would be bound to secure it."

Mr. Coolidge added that it is his belief that the Congress of the United States will respond favorably to the cause of women rights.

*National Women's Party (NWP) was founded in 1916 by Alice Paul & Lucy Burns to fight for women's right to vote culminating in passage of the 19th Amendment (1920).
