"TO GET BACK INTO WORLD OF THOUGHT"

VASSAR COLLEGE TO OFFER SCHOOL FOR ALUMNAE TIRED OF FAMILY LIFE

Chicago, Illinois (JFK+50) On November 16, 1923, Dr. Henry Noble MacCracken*, president of Vassar College**, announced "a school for alumnae who feel the need of getting away from husband and children and wish to get back into the world of thought."

Dr. MacCracken said the idea first originated in 1911 when more than 15,000 Vassar alumnae were invited back to the college and expressed a desire to return to study.

*Henry Noble MacCracken (1880-1970) was born in Toledo, Ohio & earned a degree in English at New York University, 1900.  HNM earned his MA & PhD at Harvard.  He served as the first secular president of Vassar College 1915-1946.

**Vassar College, located in Poughkeepsie, New York, was founded in 1861 by Matthew Vassar.  VC became co-educational in 1969.
