"MUCH 'ADOO ABOUT NOTHING"

MCADOO CONFIRMS CANDIDACY FOR DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION

Omaha, Nebraska (JFK+50) On November 15, 1923, the Associated Press reports that former Secretary of Treasury William G. McAdoo* has confirmed his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 1924.

Word of his intentions was first revealed in comments by David L. Rockwell** and now have been deemed as "accurate" by Mr. McAdoo himself.

The Secretary told reporters here in Omaha...

"If I have any further comment...it will come later."

*William Gibbs McAdoo (1863-1941) was born in Marietta, Georgia & moved to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1877 where he graduated from The University of Tennessee.

WGM set up a law practice in Chattanooga before becoming Woodrow Wilson's Secretary of Treasury 1913-1918.  He married WW's daughter, Eleanor, in 1914 & served in the US Senate (D-California) 1933-1938.

**David Ladd Rockwell of Revenna, Ohio was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1900, 1916 & 1928.  He was campaign manager for James M. Cox (1920) & William G. McAdoo (1924).

JFK+50 NOTE

William G. McAdoo was involved in a battle for control of the streetcar system here in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1897.  The dispute between he and C.C. Howell turned into mob violence on March 1 with one person killed and many others wounded.  After the "Battle of Depot Street",  McAdoo ended up on the short end of the dispute and left Knoxville.

At the Democratic National Convention of 1924, McAdoo defended prohibition & refused to repudiate the KKK.  He, along with Al Smith of NY, withdrew after the 99th ballot.  John W. Davis of WVA was nominated on the 103rd only to be defeated decisively in the general election by incumbent President Coolidge.
