COOLIDGE CAMPAIGN RECEIVES NICKEL CONTRIBUTION
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On March 1, 1924, The Evening Star reports that "one nickel (in hard cash) was received at the White House" today. The coin was accompanied by a letter of explanation. In part, it reads...
"In honor of you (President Calvin Coolidge) some boys of Central Falls* have formed a club. It is called the Coolidge Club. As a beginning the club consists of five members. The ages range from 11 to 13."
The nickel was the first money received by the club. The boys also sent their best wishes to the President in his campaign.
*Central Falls is located in Providence County, Rhode Island & is the smallest & most densely populated city in the smallest state in the union. CF was the site of a major battle of King Philip's War fought on March 26 1676.
