FRENCH DOCTORS FIGHT INTENSE DUEL, ONE 'RUN THROUGH' SWORD ARM, BOTH 'PRETTY WELL WINDED'
Chantilly, France (JFK+50) On February 29, 1924, the Associated Press reports a duel by sword was fought yesterday "between two leading lights of the French medical world, Professors Bernard Cuneo, a surgeon and Elic Broca, a physician."
The duel, presided over by former Minister of War General Adolphe Messimy*, was intense as the combatants "lunged, thrust and parried for a good half hour."
The fight ended with Professor Cuneo "run through" in the sword arm and both men "pretty well winded."
*Adolphe Marie Messimy (1869-1935) was born in Lyon & served in the French military before becoming a journalist. AMM served as Minister of War 1911-1912 & June-Aug 1914.
