"1ST WHITE HOUSE SERVICE FOR WIFE OF CABINET OFFICER"

FUNERAL SERVICE FOR MRS. WORK HELD AT WHITE HOUSE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 12, 1924, a funeral service was held in the East Room of the White House for Mrs. Laura M. Work*, wife of Secretary of Interior Hubert Work**.

President Calvin Coolidge and the First Lady were among 150 mourners in attendance including cabinet officers and their wives.  After the service, the body was transported to Arlington National Cemetery for burial.

The Washington Times reports this marks the first time in history a funeral service for the wife of a member of the cabinet was held in the Executive Mansion.

*Laura M. Arbuckle Work (1859-1924) had 3 children with husband Hubert M. Work who remarried in 1933 but is buried in ANC next to his first wife.

**Hubert Work (1860-1942) was born in Marion Center, Pennsylvania & earned his M.D. at University of Pennsylvania 1885.  HMW founded Woodcraft Hospital in Pueblo, Colorado 1896 & served as Postmaster General under Harding & Sec of Interior under Coolidge.
