"SAID HE WOULD SUPPORT THE FORD BID IN RETURN"

SENATOR 'JOKINGLY' ACCUSED OF BREAKING PROMISE AFTER ACCEPTING KISS FROM ALABAMA SCHOOLGIRL

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 24, 1924, The Evening Star reports that Mrs. W. B. Edmondson of Alabama "jokingly" accused Senator George Norris*, chairman of the Agriculture Committee, of breaking a promise made to an Alabama schoolgirl that he would support "the Ford bid" in return "for a kiss."

The Senator apparently took the kiss but, according to Mrs. Edmondson, failed to "make good on his part of the bargain."

JFK+50 NOTE

The Star reports also that Senator Norris asked Mrs. Edmondson if she was attempting to discredit him.  She answered that she "meant no harm" and so the proceedings continued with no further concerns.

*George William Norris (1861-1944) was born in York Township, Ohio & graduated from Baldwin-Wallace University.  GWN served in the U. S. Senate (R-Nebraska) 1913-1943.
