"THE METHOD FOR REGISTERING A PROTEST"

UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN RUSSIA COMMITTING SUICIDE

Leningrad, Russia (JFK+50) On May 21, 1924, The Evening Star reports "a wave of suicide is sweeping over the bourgeois* students of Leningrad University**."  Many students fear exclusion under a "new decree."

Lists of students posted in a Russian newspaper include as many as nine student suicides a day.  Undergraduates are "in despair" at LU as well as at other Russian universities.

The Star report reveals that suicide is considered "the method of Russian students for registering a protest when all else has failed."  Professors are in the process of petitioning the Soviet government to "modify" or postpone the decree.
