"WITH A CLEAR CUT PROGRAM OF REFORM"

LA FOLLETTE TO HEAD THIRD PARTY TICKET IN 1924

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On June 2, 1924, David Lawrence of The Evening Star reports that Senator Robert M. La Follette* of Wisconsin will "definitely...make the race for the presidency as an independent."  According to Lawrence, it doesn't matter who the nominees of the two major parties in 1924 will be.

His source is Oswald Garrison Villard** of New York City, editor of The Nation.  Mr. Villard conferred with Senator LaFollette earlier today.

Mr. Villard said...

"We feel that a great need of the country today is a progressive political party with a clear cut program of reform."

*Robert M. "Fighting Bob" La Follete (1855-1925) served in the U.S. House of Representatives, as Governor of Wisconsin & U.S. Senator 1906-1925.  RML was educated at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Wisconsin Law School.

**Oswald Garrison Villard (1872-1949) was born in Wiesbaden, Germany & became editor of the New York Evening Post.  OGV will a founding member of the NAACP & founder of the American Anti-Imperialist League.
