"CAN MAKE ANY VOYAGE OF WHICH FLEET IS CAPABLE"

NAVY LAUNCHES LARGEST SUBMARINE EVER BUILT FOR SERVICE 

Portsmouth, New Hampshire (JFK+50) On July 17, 1924, "a submarine twice as large as any built previously for the United States Navy was launched at the the navy yard" here in Portsmouth.

The sub, known as V-1*, "is the first of nine" that will join the battle fleet at sea.

The Navy says....

"The V-1 can make any voyage of which the fleet as a whole is capable."

*V-1 (SF-4) Barracuda was laid down in Oct 1921 & commissioned in Oct 1924.  She was sold in 1945.  V-1's overall length 34 ft 6 in, surface speed 31 knots, weight 2,164 tons
