"SUFFERING FROM ACUTE SEPTIC POISONING"

CALVIN COOLIDGE JR'S CONDITION IS "VERY SERIOUS"

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) The White House announced at noon on July 5, 1924, that there has been "no improvement during the night and morning in Calvin Coolidge Jr*'s condition after suffering a case of acute septic poisoning**."

The President's sixteen year old son developed an infection from a blister he sustained while playing a game of tennis.  His condition is given as "very serious."

*Calvin Jr. died at Walter Reed Hospital on July 7, 1924.  The President was deeply affected by his son's loss & mourned throughout the remainder of his time in office.

**acute septic poisoning (sepsis) is a serious condition that develops when the body responds improperly to an infection.  It can take as little as 12 hours to proceed from the earliest signs of infection to organ failure & death.
