"WE ACCOMPLISHED ALL THAT WE EXPECTED"

CALVIN COOLIDGE JR. UNDERGOES 'SUCCESSFUL' OPERATION AT WALTER REED

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On July 6, 1924, The Evening Star reports "an operation described as successful" was performed on the sixteen year old son of President and Mrs. Calvin Coolidge at Walter Reed Army Medical Center* here in the Nation's Capital last evening.

The operation on Calvin Coolidge, Jr. was done "in an attempt to arrest the course of an attack of septic poisoning."

One of the surgeons said following the procedure, "We accomplished all that we expected."

The younger Mr. Coolidge's condition is given as "critical" so the President and First Lady remained at Walter Reed "throughout the night."

*Walter Reed Army Medical Center was founded in 1909 & named in honor of Major Walter Reed who discovered that yellow fever is transmitted by mosquitoes.

The facility closed in 2011 but merged with the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland where JFK's autopsy was conducted in November 1963.
