BABE RUTH & YANKEE TEAMMATES 'STORM AROUND' CLUBHOUSE AFTER LOSS TO WHITE SOX
St. Louis, Missouri (JFK+50) George Herman 'Babe' Ruth* was not one to sing after his team lost a baseball game. The Sultan of Swat writes in The Washington Times of August 2, 1924 about a recent comment made by a sports writer in the Yankee clubhouse after they lost a "tough one" to the White Sox.
The newspaper man asked after observing the guys 'storming around',
"Is there such a thing in sports as a good loser?"
Joe Bush** responded,
"Not on the Yankees! If there was we'd fire him off the club."
*George Herman "Babe" Ruth (1895-1948) was born in Baltimore, Maryland & played professional baseball 22 seasons, 1914-1935. BR starred as a home run hitter for the NY Yankees & is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time.
**"Bullet" Joe Bush (1892-1974) was born in Brainerd, Minnesota & played with many different baseball clubs from 1912 to 1926. JB played for the NY Yankees, 1922-1924. He is credited with development of the forkball pitch.
