"MADE SENSATIONAL ESCAPE IN MAY 1920"

DRAFT DODGER BELIEVED BACK IN U.S.

Baden, Germany (JFK+50) On October 2, 1924, the Associated Press reports "government officials here are inclined to believe that Grover Cleveland Bergdoll*...has returned to America."

Bergdoll, who is wanted for draft dodging, "has not been seen in Eberbach** since April 6."

AP says Bergdoll made a "sensational escape from the United States in May 1920."

*Grover Cleveland Bergdoll (1893-1966) was born in Philadelphia, PA to a wealthy brewing family.  He was trained at Wright Flying School. GCB was arrested for violation of the Selective Service Act of 1917 but eluded capture until 1920.  Sentenced to 5 years in prison, he escaped to Eberbach, Germany but later was imprisoned, 1939-1944.

**Eberbach is located 33 km east of Heidelberg, Germany.  Founded in 1227, this tourist city celebrated its 750th year jubilee in 1977.
