SENATOR BROOKHART OPENS CAMPAIGN ATTACKING COOLIDGE & REPUBLICAN LEADERS

Emmetsburg, Iowa (JFK+50) On October 3, 1924, Senator Smith W. Brookhart* "formally opened his campaign for re-election...with an address in which he attacked President (Calvin) Coolidge and 'machine party leaders.'"

The Senator believes the Republican Party has strayed from the ideals of its founders.  He said...

"I belong to the farm bloc; the President belongs to the Wall Street bloc."

*Smith Wildman Brookhart (1869-1944) was born in Arbela, Missouri & became a insurgent Republican, critical of both Harding & Coolidge, serving the US Senate 1922-1926 & 1927-1933.  

SWB served in the US Army during the Spanish-American War & practiced law before entering politics.
