"ENTRANCES TO NATION'S CAPITAL ARE 'DISGRACEFUL'"

D.C.'S ENTRANCES SHOULD BE FINEST OF ANY CITY IN THE WORLD, SAYS COL. SHERRILL

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On January 22, 1925, Lt. Col. C.O. Sherrill*, officer in charge of public buildings and grounds, told the Public Buildings and Grounds Committee that Washington's present entrances are "disgraceful" and supports the completion of the Arlington Memorial Bridge** to give "the finest entrance of any city in the world."

Rep. Charles Brand*** (R-Ohio) says that there should be "a magnificent boulevard from the bridge to the Capitol, lined on either side with public buildings."

Col. Sherrill says the AMB will give "the most beautiful approach" to the Nation's Capital, rivaling any city in the world.

He reminded the committee that President Andrew Jackson had supported a bridge spanning the Potomac between the White House and Arlington National Cemetery.

*Clarence Osborne Sherrill (1876-1959) was born in Newton, North Carolina & attended Trinity College (Duke) & USMA, 1901.  COS served in WWI & as chief military aide to Presidents Harding & Coolidge.
