KANSAS GOVERNOR & SON TO BE ARRESTED ON CONSPIRACY & BRIBE CHARGES
Topeka, Kansas (JFK+50) On January 12, 1925, Kansas governor Jonathan M. Davis* and his son, Russell Davis, were "charged in information" at city court with "conspiracy and accepting a bribe."
The charges are in conjunction with alleged sales of pardons. The governor will be the first chief executive of the state to be arrested.
Governor Davis's lawyers, as reported by The Washington Times, will put up the $1000 bond required for each client's bail. Jonathan Davis will be held in "technical custody" during the inauguration of a new governor.
*Jonathan McMillan Davis (1871-1943) was born in Bronson, Kansas & attended the University of Kansas & University of Nebraska-Lincoln. JMD served in the Kansas House of Representatives 1905-1913 & Kansas State Senate 1915-1917, Governor of Kansas 1923-1925.
JFK+50 NOTE
Governor Davis was defeated for re-election in 1924 and while indicted twice on bribery charges, he was acquitted both times.
