"BOTH MOTHER & BABY ARE DOING WELL"

HEALTHY BABY GIRL BORN TO TR'S DAUGHTER ALICE

Chicago, Illinois (JFK+50) On February 14, 1925, "a daughter* was born to Mrs. Nicholas Longworth, formerly Alice Roosevelt**," here in Chicago. Associated Press reports "both mother and baby are doing well."  The baby girl is the granddaughter of former president Theodore Roosevelt.

Mrs. Longworth's husband, a Republican congressman representing Ohio, is expected to arrive tomorrow "by fast train."

At the hospital with Mrs. Longworth were the former First Lady and Kermit Roosevelt.

The baby girl weighs 6 pounds 3.5 ounces.

JFK+50 NOTE

It was widely suspected that Pauline's father was not Nicholas Longworth but Senator William Borah with whom Alice was having an affair.  Reportedly Alice considered Pauline "a bothersome nuisance."

Alice Roosevelt Longworth met sixteen Presidents of the United States ranging from Benjamin Harrison to Gerald Ford.  Vice-President Richard M. Nixon was a pallbearer at her funeral.

*Pauline Longworth Sturm (1925-1957) married Alexander Sturm, co-founder of one of the largest gun manufacturers in 1944.  The couple moved to Connecticut.

**Alice Lee Roosevelt Longworth (1884-1980) was born in New York City, the eldest child of TR & only child of his 1st wife, Alice Hathaway Lee Roosevelt.  ALR died 2 days after her birth & TR was so distraught he didn't want the child called Alice, he chose 'Baby Lee' instead.

Alice was described as the original 'wild child' of the White House.  Her antics were so publicized that TR told the press "I can either run the country or I can attend to Alice, but I can't possibly do both."
