APPEAL FOR 'ADEQUATE' D.C. NATIONAL GUARD ARMORY TO BE MADE
Virginia Beach, Virginia (JFK+50) On August 19, 1925, The Evening Star reports that the "need of an adequate armory for the National Guard of the District of Columbia will be stressed by Captain Frank Lockhead in a special report to the Militia Bureau of the War Department."
William J. Wheatley writes that a movement is afoot "to get a fitting armory...at the next session of Congress." The current inadequacy of armory facilities has worsened due to the sale of Convention Hall which had been used for drill.
JFK+50 NOTE
Apparently Captain Lockhead's argument did not win enough support because during the 1920s & 1930s the District of Columbia did not have a "permanent designated" National Guard Armory. They had to use rented spaces for drills and operations.
Finally, in 1941, a D.C. Armory was built at 2001 E. Capitol Street, SE, Washington, D.C. 20003.
