MONUMENT HONORING COLUMBUS DISAPPEARS
San Juan, Puerto Rico (JFK+50) On April 29, 1926, Associated Press reports that citizens of two towns here in Puerto Rico are "charging the other with being responsible for the disappearance" of a monument honoring Christopher Columbus.
Records located in the base of the monument have also gone missing "and the police of both towns (Aguada* & Aguadilla**) are trying to trace them."
AP says the monument, erected near the Culebrinas River, commemorates the 400th anniversary of the landing of Columbus.
*Aguada is located in the northwest coastal valley region of Puerto Rico bordering on the Atlantic Ocean. Some believe Columbus landed here on his 2nd voyage to America in 1493. The town was founded in 1639.
**Aguadilla is located on the northwestern tip of Puerto Rico & borders the Atlantic Ocean. The town was founded in 1780.
