"TO BE BUILT IN WEST POTOMAC PARK"

MOVEMENT BEGUN TO RAISE FUNDS FOR DISTRICT MEMORIAL TO WORLD WAR VETERANS & DEAD

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On April 11, 1926, The Sunday Star reports "a movement to memorialize in stone the valor of her sons...who fought in the World War" was launched in Washington today.

The proposed war memorial will add to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery and the Arlington Memorial Bridge.  It is to be built in West Potomac Park between the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and the Tidal Basin.

The Star reports a fund of $200,000 will be required for the memorial. The project is directed by the District of Columbia Memorial Commission & headed by Frank B. Noyes.

JFK+50 NOTE

The District of Columbia War Memorial commemorates 26,000 "residents & citizens" of the District who served in the U.S. military during WWI, including the 499 who lost their lives.

The memorial was built in 1931 & dedicated by President Herbert Hoover on Armistice Day, November 11, 1931.  It is located in West Potomac Park slightly off Independence Avenue.
