"USING & ABUSING THE NUDE FEMALE FIGURE"

PUBLISHERS CALLED TO BAN 'SUGGESTIVE & QUESTIONABLE ADVERTISING'

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On April 12, 1926, The Evening Star reports "an appeal for the publishers of newspapers in the Western Hemisphere...to ban all suggestive and questionable advertising...was made before the 1st Pan-American Journalists Congress this morning."

In addition, the appeal called for barring attracting the attention of readers "by using or abusing...the nude female figure."

The appeal came from by Dr. Ramiro Guerra* who, according to the Star, seemed particularly concerned about "the much-used bathing girl and silk-stocking model."

*Dr. Ramiro Guerra Sanchez (1880-1970) was a professor at the University of Havana & wrote books on geography & history.  RGS was editor of the Havana newspaper Piarro de la Mariha.
