KENNEDY LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN WITH 'FRONTAL ASSAULT' ON NIXON
Los Angeles, California (JFK+50) On July 16, 1960, The Evening Star reports that Senator John F. Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) "launched his campaign for the presidency with a frontal assault on Vice-President (Richard M.) Nixon" last night here in Los Angeles.
Senator Kennedy charged that the would-be Republican presidential nominee in 1960 "has often seemed to show charity toward none and malice for all."
JFK promised a "New Frontier*" but said that "holds out the promise of more sacrifice instead of more security."
Both Senator Kennedy and his Vice-Presidential running mate, Senator Lyndon B. Johnson (D-Texas) pledged to campaign on "the most liberal" platform the Democrats have ever endorsed.
*New Frontier--a phrase that became the label for JFK's domestic & foreign policy programs. It achieved mixed reviews--success in the space program & Peace Corps but failure to get Congress behind civil rights & anti-poverty programs.
